Success
towards 'Asylum Justice' in Newport Xmas '05
> Christmas 2005 brings fundraising success
to Asylum Justice
A group of nearly 40 volunteers worked with
Newport Amnesty to raise the £750 needed to setup a
local Asylum Justice project. In the week before Christmas,
Monday 19 th to Friday 23 rd December, we raised money by
wrapping presents for people buying books from the Ottakar's
shop. Customers were invited to give a donation in return
for an expertly wrapped present decorated with ribbons and
labels or whatever people wanted.
> What can we now do in Newport ?
Now
that the group has this money it can set up a regular surgery
where asylum seekers can meet legally trained solicitors to
help them with their initial asylum applications as well as
with appeals. All work will be done by volunteers; money will
support the costs of a mobile phone, postage and administration
costs and volunteer expenses. For more information on the
work please click here
> Thanks to people who gave money, volunteers
and to Ottakar's
First of all thanks to the people who gave so generously to
us this Christmas… we hope your presents were wrapped well
also! I would like to thank all the people who volunteered
this and hope they are encouraged to do more fundraising activities
in the future. The final thanks are to Ottakar's bookshop,
without whom we would not have been able to do this work.
The shop were also generous enough to supply us with nearly
all of the wrapping paper. Merry Christmas and a Happy New
Year to all.
